How Much Does New Carpet Cost in Toronto? What Affects the Price

By Atlas Rug & Design Centre Team · 3 min read

"What's new carpet going to cost me?" is the first question almost every homeowner asks — and the honest answer is that it depends on a handful of clear factors. Rather than a single number, it helps to understand what actually drives the price, so you can budget with confidence before booking a carpet consultation. Here's how carpet pricing works in Toronto.

1. The Fibre You Choose

Fibre is the biggest single factor. The three we recommend each sit at a different price point:

Polyester is the most budget-friendly. It's naturally stain-resistant and comes in vibrant colours — great value for bedrooms and lower-traffic rooms. Nylon sits in the middle and is the best all-rounder: durable, resilient, and available in the widest range of styles, which is why it's our most-recommended fibre for busy homes. Wool is the premium choice — naturally resilient, luxurious, and long-lasting, at the top of the price range. For a full comparison, see our guide to the differences between wool, nylon and polyester.

2. The Size and Number of Rooms

Carpet is priced largely by area, so a single bedroom costs far less than a whole upper floor. Larger jobs use more material and more installation labour — though they sometimes come with better per-square-foot value. Measuring accurately matters: a proper in-home measure accounts for pile direction, pattern matching, and seam placement so you're not over- or under-ordering.

3. The Underpad

The cushion under your carpet is easy to overlook, but it affects both comfort and cost. A basic pad is economical and fine for low-traffic bedrooms; a premium or memory-foam pad costs more but adds noticeable comfort and extends the life of the carpet above it. In condos, an acoustic-rated underpad may be required to meet building sound rules — worth factoring in. Our carpet page breaks down the underpad tiers.

4. Installation and Old Carpet Removal

Professional installation — stretching the carpet properly, fitting seams, and finishing edges and transitions — is part of the price, and it's what separates a floor that looks great for years from one that bubbles and wears early. Removal and disposal of your old carpet and underpad is usually included in a proper quote too. Always confirm what's covered so there are no surprises.

5. Stairs and Complex Areas

Stairs cost more per square foot than open rooms because each tread is measured and fitted individually — especially on curved or winding staircases. If you're carpeting stairs or adding a stair runner, expect that portion to carry a higher labour rate than a simple bedroom.

What a Good Quote Includes

A trustworthy carpet quote is itemized: it spells out the carpet, the underpad, the installation labour, and the old-carpet removal as separate lines, with one clear total. Vague "all-in" estimates that can't be broken down are a red flag. At Atlas Rug & Design Centre, every quote is written and itemized — the number we quote is the number you pay.

How to Get the Best Value

Choosing a quality nylon over wool, opting for a standard underpad in low-traffic rooms, and carpeting bedrooms while leaving main floors as hard surface are all sensible ways to control cost without sacrificing a good result. And because we stock our own carpet, you're choosing from in-stock options without paying for long special-order delays.
